It’s week two, ladies and gentlemen! We’ve survived week two of distance learning, and we’ve already had our first parent/teach pow-wow. It’s another Thursday, and here’s another week of tech talk with Mark Starling and the First News 570 crew. BIG TECH FACED HUGE SELL OFF THIS WEEK

Technology stocks faced another round of sell-offs as investor are seeking profits. US technology stocks have mostly rallied amid this year’s pandemic as many people were forced to stay home and shelter-in-place. This push online ordering and streaming to record levels with consumers finding solaces in electronics. This news comes amid the global economy facing an estimated 5% contraction this year with predictions that stock markets will be bumpy for the next several months.

TWITCH TO LETS USER SELF-ORGANIZE ESPORTS TOURNAMENTS

Yesterday, online gaming community, Twitch announced Versus, a new feature that lets Twitch users organize and host their own gaming tournaments. Versus is a set of tools that will allow collegiate esports teams, game developers, and others manage players, set leaderboards, and broadcast tournaments to the Internet. EPIC BATTLE HEATS UP BETWEEN MAKER OF FORTNITE AND APPLE

I don’t know whether to yawn or cheer when I see two multi-billion companies fight over sums. Apple has countered the maker of Fortnite, Epic by saying its move to setup an alternate payment method outside of the App Store amounts to simple theft. Before being outright banned by Apple from the App Store, Epic had offered Fortnite to players at a $2 discounted from the App Store price of $9.99. Apple for its part says that Epic gets lots of value from being in the App Store including security checks for malware. Reportedly, Fortnite players using the Android edition of the software received third party copies that contained malware from a number of sources. We’ll keep following the story as it heats, or I’ll be flossing in the corner.

Bad Boys, Bad Boys, Whatcha Goin’ Do…

The kids started school this week, and I’m already feeling oppressed. The local network is clogged, kids are kicking us out of rooms for their class room Zooms, and there’s just way too much noise. But, alas, it’s Thursday! Here’s another week of tech talk with Mark Starling and the First News 570 crew. This week, India bans a bunch of Chinese apps, Facebook and El Goog will be banning Australian media, and the FBI is trying to ban hackers before they strike! Lot’s of banning this week. You can listen to Mark and I point and laugh while talking about the wild and crazy technology world every Thursday morning, LIVE at 6:43am Eastern.

INDIA BANS POPULAR CHINESE APPS

While the US has banned the TikTok from government phones, India has banned over 118 apps from being sold in its country. These titles include PlayerUnknown’s Battleground, WeChat work, and Marvel Super War (I know, right). The Indian government is citing that the apps are serving in the disinterest of India. The Indian government is claiming the apps are stealing consumer information and surreptitiously sending data back to Chinese servers. The ban is happening against the backdrop of Chinese and Indian troops clashing in disputed territories including a dispute on the Himalayan border.

US FRUIT COMPANY PASSES $2 TRILLION MARKET CAP (THAT’S A LOT OF APPLES)

Yesterday, Apple’s stock price crossed the $467.77 price per share. It was then that Apple’s market capitalization pushed it to $2,000,000,000,000. Apple’s share price gained 50-percent from the start of the year, a year during a pandemic when people are sheltering in place and consuming lots of content on Apple devices and services. Apple is now the world’s most valuable company surpassing the oil conglomerate Saudi Aramco. Apple’s value is coming just as it’s being sued by Epic Games for kicking Fortnite out of the App Store, and battling software developers over price gouging tactics for taking 30% of software sales on their platforms. Apple stock is the best performing stock I ever owned.

DUO IS COMING SOON AND WILL WANTS ONE!

Folding devices might be here to stay. Yesterday, Microsoft unfurled news about its latest Surface device, the Duo. The Duo is an Android powered Surface Phone that folds in half like a little book. The device is reportedly super thin, and is part tablet, part phone, all sexy. The device has two 5.6in AMOLED screens that give you an 8.1 inch display. A lot of talk is being made about the price, the Duo clocks in at $1,400 which is just as much as a single screen and fully tricked out iPhone Max 11. You can drag content, watch a movie while working on a spreadsheet, or read a book while doing your taxes. The new device comes on September 10th, and I’m looking forward to seeing how it fares. Pre-order today.
